Failed Experiment

After deciding to start giving the Munchkin a little more freedom during the day, we started yesterday by letting her have the whole bedroom instead of just her crate to wander around in. This sounds like a lot of space, but it really isn't. The bed takes up easily half of the room, the closet sticks out about two feet by five feet, and the rest of the room is mostly occupied by dressers. So it sounds good, but she really wasn't getting a ton more space.

Didn't matter. It didn't work.

Indie Rocker went home at lunch to check on her. She had moved the entire mattress a foot to the right, pulled the flat sheet off the bed, chewed through the fitted sheet and the mattress pad, and chewed a hole in the underside of the mattress.

Apparently, the Munchkin has a wicked case of separation anxiety. Awesome.

Needless to say, she spent the afternoon back in her crate. I took her for about an hour and a half long walk last night and put her Kong with some treats in her crate with her when we went to dinner.

So we now get to figure out how to deal with this. I read somewhere yesterday that separation anxiety is the second most popular reason that people either euthanize or give back their dogs. Really? I mean, yeah it's annoying and it's going to be a lot of work, but she's our dog. I don't understand people who get pets and then don't understand that pets take actual work. Obviously, getting rid of the Munchkin will never happen.

Keep your fingers crossed that we can fix this. Hopefully the fact that she's still a puppy will work in our favor.

Quote of the Day: I was trying to find one from Marley and Me, but I haven't read it and the movie hasn't come out yet, so I give up.
