Smashing garlic is really fun. No, really!

Crazy weekend. I’m still not sure if it was good or bad, but I’m still standing, so that’s usually a good sign.

Wednesday I spent in bed after calling in late to work because I was coughing up a lung. Around 8:30, Martini called and told me not to bother coming in to work since the girls didn’t want me to share my germs. So I slept. All day. I finally got up around 4 and dragged myself out to eat some sushi with Steamboat, have dessert with the girls, have a beer with the girls and then stop by TGWS’s going away party with Marshall and her brother, Kodiak. We ran into Minnie, Eeyore, and Teddy at the party and stayed significantly longer than we meant to. It actually ended up being really fun.

Thursday was spent sleeping in and cooking. It was awesome. Since Mom and I took a cooking class on Monday, I was all about helping her cook. I got to smash garlic, which was super fun, and got to chop stuff and play with knives and boiling water and all that cool stuff that goes along with cooking. It rocked. My parents’ best friends came over with their daughter and we ate tons of good food, joked around and ate some more. Speedy, Marshall, Kodiak, Chitown and I headed out for our second annual sibling post-Thanksgiving beer around 9, which was fun. We were all so full that we would talk for a few minutes and then start spacing out and watching “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” which was playing on the big screen on the wall. It was hilarious.

Friday was spent sleeping in again, which rocked. I got to eat Mom’s coffee cake for the second morning in a row and Dad, Speedy and I had a great big snow tire party, so that once it does start snowing, we can all drive to the mountain now. After I finished my laundry, I decided to suck it up and drive over to Roche’s house, since I was sick of thinking about him and decided to just deal with the situation so I don’t have to spend any more time on it. We talked for the better part of two hours and seem to have settled on some attempt at being friends, so we’ll see. He doesn’t totally get it and I’m not sure he’s ever going to. After that, I met up with Joy and her friends to watch the Christmas tree lighting downtown. Which we missed. Because we were getting hot cocoas. Go figure. Oh well. It was still cool. After that, we went over to Joy’s friend’s house for dinner and to hang with her folks. It was fun, actually. The food was incredible. Roche called and invited us to go play pool, so after a while we went and did that. It was kind of a stupid idea and I regretted going, but what can you do? Fortunately, Joy and I weren’t done with our evening quite yet, so when Roche’s crew finally took off, ours sort of broke up as well. We had one of the girls take us over to see Fresh, but then we ran into some college drinking buddies of Joy’s, so we headed to a different bar and drank ourselves silly. It was great.

Saturday I woke up a little hungover. Roche called to see if I was going hashing, which I wasn’t sure I wanted to do. I took Joy home, Strong Draught cooked breakfast and then Walkabout called to give me directions to her house and to tell me that I was coming hashing. Go figure. Roche called back to make sure I was going, so I finally changed my clothes and got moving. I got over to Walkabout’s house in plenty of time and didn’t even get lost, so Roche can kiss my ass. For a variety of reasons, as it turns out, but that’s the first one. Either way, I ended up riding with Roche down to the hash, so whatever. It was a great time—I did actually run for a good chunk of it as well as drank some beer. They even had hot buttered rum and food at the end of it, so that rocked. I lost Walkabout’s shirt, but hopefully someone will find it. If not, it’s off to REI to replace it. Oh well. God bless gift certificates.

After the hash, I headed back to Walkabout’s house with the crew and ended up being partially dragged to the hockey game since I still had a few hours before meeting up with the girls for Dumped Girls Night Out at McMeatMarket. It was a good game, and we had a lot of fun. I even ran into Afroman, which was hilarious. He’s so cool. I wish I would have known to bring a teddy bear, since there was a special thing going on when the Winterhawks scored their first goal of the night, the fans tossed teddy bears onto the ice to be donated to the local children’s hospitals. There were hundreds of teddy bears cascading over our heads for a good five minutes once the team scored. It was very cool.

I bailed after the second period to run home, change, meet Speedy and head to the club. We got there late, which sucked because it meant that we had to stand in line and potentially pay cover. We managed to get out of paying cover, fortunately, but were still freezing outside for the better part of half an hour. I hate that. We bitched, I saw Backup Date, one of Joy’s college buddies, and we bitched some more before finally getting in and seeing everyone. Joy, Marshall, Blondie, Princess, and several assorted other friends were all there and had taken over a table at the corner of the main bar area. It ended up being a prime location and we promptly set up our own party right there.

Hottie and Kodiak joined us about an hour or two into the evening, which was hilarious. Everyone was dancing, drinking, running around the club, flirting and otherwise goofing off. We managed to close the club, which was hilarious. I’d had so much fun that I didn’t even notice that it had gotten so late. Joy and I found ourselves dancing with a cute Aussie and his Dutch friend. Awesome.

Sunday was spent in pajamas, watching movies and making chocolate chip cookies. Sweet. Now it’s back to the grindstone, which hasn’t sucked so far. I’m quite busy, so that’s a great thing.

Results, Part II

At 3:01pm, the variable established contact via email, thus partially proving the aforementioned hypothesis insofar as he misses me. Good. He doesn't want to call, because he thinks I need my space. In all fairness, he's partially right. It would be a severely awkward conversation right about now.

Now the experiment must change, because I have to think of something seriously clever to say.

Go me.

The Scientific Method

1. Observation and description of a phenomenon or group of phenomena.
On Sunday, I observed Roche's decision to "break up" or "reclassify" our relationship from a dating relationship to "just friends." Based on statements made, body language, and tone of voice, I have determined that he is serious about being "just friends." Now, being serious about being friends is all well and good. Now the onus is on him to act on said impulse and cause me to want to be friends with him.
2. Formulation of an hypothesis to explain the phenomena. In physics, the hypothesis often takes the form of a causal mechanism or a mathematical relation.
I hypothesize that the desire to be friends will cause Roche to call me around Thanksgiving.
3. Use of the hypothesis to predict the existence of other phenomena, or to predict quantitatively the results of new observations.
I predict that Roche will call me and express desire to be friends, as well as propose several scenarios in which we could be friends.
4. Performance of experimental tests of the predictions by several independent experimenters and properly performed experiments.
My test will consist of not calling or contacting Roche. I will instead regard this as a purely observational study. The test subject (Roche) will be the only one allowed to make contact with the observer (me). If I or any of my friends makes any sort of contact with him, the experiment will be declared null and void, since the constant group (me) will be compromised. Roche, being the variable, is allowed to make contact when the desire strikes.

Potential theories: The ender of a romantic relationship feels more responsible for the feelings of the endee, thus they tend to desire the establishment of a "lesser" or "substitute" relationship such as a friendship. The endee generally is not as supportive of this idea. Hence, the establishment of a scientific experiment to prove that in this particular instance, Roche feels badly enough about the end of the romantic relationship so as to take on the responsibility of creating a "friendship."

If the experiments bear out the hypothesis it may come to be regarded as a theory or law of nature (more on the concepts of hypothesis, model, theory and law below). If the experiments do not bear out the hypothesis, it must be rejected or modified. What is key in the description of the scientific method just given is the predictive power (the ability to get more out of the theory than you put in; see Barrow, 1991) of the hypothesis or theory, as tested by experiment. It is often said in science that theories can never be proved, only disproved. There is always the possibility that a new observation or a new experiment will conflict with a long-standing theory.

Am I a dork? Yes. Do I care? No. Is this keeping me from calling him? Yes.

RESULTS FROM DAY ONE: No contact.

RESULTS FROM DAY TWO: No contact so far. It's also only 1pm.

Whatever.

Roche just wants to be friends. Whatever.

Suddenly it's not such a catastrophe that Eire's coming back into town next month. Go figure.

I went down, down, down and the flames leapt higher.

Pyro weekend!!! It started out well and ended even better. The weather was perfect all weekend, which made going up to El Cabino so, so much fun. Friday night was great, as Roche picked me up on the bike (God, I just love saying that. The bike. So hot.) and took me to dinner. So fun, even if the road down to the restaurant was like, Lombard Street steep and badly maintained. The food was yummy, and the service was really good. After that, we headed back to his place to swap bike for car and go back to my neighborhood to meet Bumbershoot and take her out for a beer with us. We managed to hang out for a few hours before Roche ran out of steam and went home, so Bumbershoot and I hung out for a little longer before going home to go to bed.

Bumbershoot and I went to breakfast on Saturday morning at the Boulangerie, which was so yummy. It’s awfully spendy, but I figure that I can splurge occasionally. From there we ran errands on foot since we were both stuffed with good food. We managed to track down Joy and YM to trek up to the mountain with us. Roche was supposed to come with, but he was finally getting stuff done on his house, so we let him take the late bus by himself and the girls all went up together. We stopped by Wendy’s on the way, and discovered a new taste sensation—Kahlua Frosties. Yum. Really, yum.

By the time we got to the cabin, it was getting a little darker, but we hiked right up and started helping with fires and such. Chitown and Ty Webb were up there, as was Canuck and his brother, helping Redhead and the fam. Bumbershoot and Joy jumped right in, as I ferried people around using a flashlight since shortly after I got there, DB and family arrived, followed by State, Yooper, and a bunch of other people. Roche got lost, so we spent some time on the phone trying to find him. Hilarious. My favorite question was, “Does any part of this involve a dirt road?” Um, no. I refuse to believe that my directions were that bad. Anyway…

The party went great, actually. Everyone pitched in to help, we managed to burn 8-12 fires while I was there all while eating, talking, drinking Mirror Pond, and chasing each other around. It was great. Roche bonded with DB and Boarder, which is a little frightening. Apparently DB wants to ride motorcycles with Roche, since they were talking about them for quite some time. I’m just glad that DB was in a good mood for once. I’m becoming less and less interested in seeing what’s going to happen when Eire comes back to town since I’m becoming more and more interested in seeing what happens with Roche. Oh well. I’m not going to worry about this until I have to.

Sunday morning was extremely pleasant, as everyone gathered for yummy breakfast and chatting. It was great fun to sit around the table and make fun of each other as per usual. I’m really looking forward to the cabin this year, since I think it’s going to be a lot of fun. Roche asked me if he would be able to stay up there, and while I didn’t say no, I didn’t say yes either since it isn’t my call. It’s technically full, particularly the double beds, and now that Minnie’s up there too, there’s an extra half of a couple in limbo as well. Well, that’s a bridge to cross when we get to it. Seeing as there isn’t even any snow yet, I’m not so much stressing about sleeping at the cabin yet.

Wow, could I talk about the boy any more right now? Sorry about that. God.

Anyway, we all drove back in the morning so that Bumbershoot could get back to Eugene and Roche could work on his house. I got some things accomplished and then drove out to hang out with WRX for a few hours. I got to see his new place and hang out for a little while. He’s a great guy and we’re good at being friends. That kicks ass. He invited me out for beers next Saturday, since he’s hanging out with one of our mutual friends from Eugene. I’m very excited about the whole thing. Yay!

After that, I came home, cooked dinner for Roche, and went to my friend’s bday party, which was totally fun. I’m exhausted, but in a completely good way. Whew.

Blue Eyes

This is kind of how my life feels to me right now. There are a few lines that make me think of Roche, particularly since out of nowhere last night, he looked at me and said, "Blue Eyes." and stared at me. Interesting.

Wish enough, wise man'll tell you a lie
Window broke, torn up screens
Who'd have thought that you'd dream
Of a single tragic scene

I just wanna sing a song with you
I just want to take it off of you

Cause Blue Eyes
You are all that I need
Cause Blue Eyes
You’re the sweet to my mean

Fess it up, dot on the palm of your hand
I can help you to stand
Saved it up for this dance
Tell me all the things you can

I just wanna sing a song with you
I just wanna be the one that's true

Cause Blue Eyes
You’re the secret I keep
Cause Blue Eyes

All the lights on and you are alive
But you can't point the way to your heart
So sublime, when the stars are aligned
But you don't know
You don't know the greatness you are

Cause Blue Eyes
You are destiny's scene
Cause Blue Eyes
I just wanna be the one

I just wanna sing a song with you
I just wanna get it on with you

Cause Blue Eyes
You’re the secret I keep
Cause Blue Eyes
I just wanna sing a song with you.

Cold and I don't care.

I got to go for a motorcycle ride with a cute boy on Sunday. That pretty much totally rocked, because for some reason I find motorcycles really hot and that made him even cuter than he already was.

And I haven't gotten to ride a motorcycle since college, when I briefly dated a guy who had one. The docs have been making fun of me all day, since they treat motorcycle wreck victims all the time. It's hilarious. When Roche's friends and I were chatting, we were comparing notes on wrecks before Roche reminded me that I had to get back on the bike to get home.

Either way, the weekend kicked ass. Friday night was supposed to be a girl's night in with Joy and Steamboat. And it was, for a while. Then Strong Draught and Japan came home and we all went out for beers before coming back to the house, ostensibly to crash. Which we didn't, because Fresh and Priest came over to hang out since the bar they work at was shut down since all the drains were backing up. What a mess.

Saturday morning was spent recovering, which I didn't want to do, and getting rehired at the mountain. That kicked ass, since I got to spend hours listening to my friends and hanging out with everyone again. While the GM of the mountain was talking, I was joking around with DB, Gorgeous, and YM. The GM was so ridiculously boring that we couldn't believe they'd made him the last speaker. Dumb.

After we filled out piles of paperwork, we all headed downstairs to get pictures taken, shop, and see people. On the way we ran into Joy and her crew, so we dragged them in as well. I shopped, walked around and got a pass pic taken since mine from last year didn't look like me halfway through last season, much less now.

I was seriously dragging at this point from lack of food and dehydration, so I pestered Marshall until she took her pass pic and we could leave. I met up with Joy and Bubbles, after Marshall dropped me off, to watch the uber-depressing end of the Ducks game at a bar downtown. Chitown came by to hang out with me for a while, so that was fun.

TGR was Saturday night, so Marshall and I met back up at the Roseland to set up for Surfrider. We rapidly made friends, particularly when we went on a Taco Bell run and brought some back for some of the guys. I love being called an angel. Hee!

Once our friends started coming in, we got crazy busy. We didn't have tons of people to talk to, but it seemed to go well, and the people we did talk to were cool.

The movie kicked ass, as did the free beers that this dude kept buying for us.

Afterwards, we packed up and went to a different bar since we didn't really want to stick around for the afterparty. It was great, since there were about 12 of us there all cuddled up in the corner with the couch and the comfy chairs. Sprite, Joy, Sprite's boyfriend Beastie, Redhead, Marshall, Chitown, Chief LHV, Roche and a whole mess of other people kept coming in. At one point, I was slouched on the chairs/makeshift couch in between Chief LHV and Roche for the better part of 45 minutes before Roche, Headfirst and I went to the bar for shots. Mmmm. That might be the first time ever that shots haven't been disastrous. I also managed to drag Roche out onto the dance floor with Sprite and Beastie for a little while. Unfortunately, I ended up leaving shortly thereafter, since Chitown was down for the count and needed to go home. So, I cabbed it with him, which turned into the drama of the week. Gah.

Either way, Roche and Headfirst came to get me, which was awfully nice of them, particularly since I had left my purse, sweater and tab at the bar. Thanks, Marshall, for closing that!! Once we got back to town, we realized that Headfirst's truck had gotten towed, so we were off to the impound lot to wait. I got to bed at 5:00am. On the bright side, Roche got my number and promised to call.

Brunch on Sunday was at Little Bird's parents' house, which was delicious. We had a really nice time catching up, talking wedding stuff with the girls and drinking mimosas while eating yummy food.

I tried coming home and taking a nap, which was interrupted by phone calls from everyone. Gah. I finally just got up and went over to Roche's so he could help me go buy a new cell phone thanks to the total destruction of mine.

Oh, and I went to the Faint concert with Roche and Strong Draught. Go see them whenever you can. They are so amazing and I have rarely danced so much in my life. Woohoo!

Boulevard of Broken Dreams

I can't really express how I feel today about last night's election, but the lyrics below seem to encompass a little of how I'm feeling. It's so difficult to keep the faith and keep hope alive during a time of great upheaval and disappointment. To those who are wondering what they can do, get involved. The DNC needs us more than ever. It needs us to pool our resources, spearhead projects, create enthusiasm even for non-presidential elections and it needs us to care.

Our chance now is to show the nation that this election was a catalyst for a broader movement and the mobilization of a generation to take charge of their government and take back power from a good old boys club who doesn't trust us, need us, or care about us.

Take back your country one day at a time. The day will arrive, sooner rather than later, when the majority of voters realize that they made a grave mistake by re-electing Bush. That's when we step up and take our country, our government and our values back.

We believe in diversity, in education, in awareness, in unity and in the future. We are the future. Let's make it count. Let's find ourselves on a lonely street, look for others to unite with and discover that we aren't so alone anymore.

Boulevard of Broken Dreams, by Green Day
I walk a lonely road
The only one that I have ever known
Don't know where it goes
But it's home to me and I walk alone

I walk this empty street
On the Blvd. of broken dreams
Where the city sleeps
And I'm the only one and I walk alone

I walk alone
I walk alone
I walk alone
I walk a...

My shadows the only one that walks beside me
My shallow hearts the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
Till then I walk alone

I'm walking down the line
That divides me somewhere in my mind
On the border line of the edge
And where I walk alone

Read between the lines
What's fucked up and everythings all right
Check my vital signs to know I'm still alive
And I walk alone

I walk alone
I walk alone
I walk alone
I walk a...

My shadows the only one that walks beside me
My shallow hearts the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
Till then I walk alone

I walk this empty street
On the Blvd. of broken dreams
Where the city sleeps
And I'm the only one and I walk a..

My shadows the only one that walks beside me
My shallow hearts the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
Till then I walk away!

Boooo!!!

Halloween is definitely one of my favorite holidays, since it requires dressing up, candy, and past the age of high school, wanton consumption of adult beverages. While this is not to say that I try to intentionally drink too much, my friends and I did decide to go big on Saturday night. Friday night was spent recovering from Thursday, since Joy and I went completely overboard that night as well. God. Good thing the election is over tomorrow (VOTE, dammit) and I can sleep for once. Anyway, Friday night was spent hanging out with Libbie, since she was in town for Trick-or-Vote. That was nice, since I got to sit around drinking tea, chatting, and then having some low-key drinks. It kicked ass, actually. Libbie and I seem to have a much better friendship than we used to, so that doesn’t suck.

Saturday morning I slept in wayyyy past when I wanted to since I turned my alarm clock off intentionally. I finally staggered out of bed and started doing things I needed to do. Steamboat and I went over to the coffeeshop for chai, then we came home and I made blueberry pancakes, since I promised Strong Draught I would. After that, Strong Draught and I carved pumpkins, which I still need to clean up, and I cleaned up and got ready to run errands. First I had to get a leather trench from one friend for Pool Shark’s costume and then Pool Shark and I worked for an hour on his costume, which mostly consisted of fighting with his wig. It was hilarious, since he had this, like, Ace Frehley wig and he was dressing as the Crow. So we trimmed, pomaded, chopped, gelled and otherwise tweaked with the wig for the better part of an hour. It looked OK by the time I left, since I had to get over to Marshall’s and get our costumes squared away. We made it to Goodwill, the party store and the hardware store just in time, so she dressed up as a cowgirl and I was Go-go Yubari. I actually looked quite a bit like her, insofar as a white girl can look like an Asian. Whatever. Joy came over and met me at my apartment so that we could start party hopping. We met Steamboat over on the other side of the river to go get a black wig from her friend and then drove to Beaverton for our first party. We stayed there long enough to say hello to everyone and then bailed over to the other side of town for a party at Joy’s friend’s house. We picked up Strong Draught on the way, who was dressed as the Sandman. Yeah, nobody knew who he was at all. Pretty funny, really. Anyway, we got to the second party and saw a bunch of people, but then went downstairs to play MarioKart and when we came back up, everyone had disappeared. So we collected a few people and headed over to yet another party. This one was at Eeyore’s house, which is the traditional Halloween gathering party. This was tons of fun, as everyone was partying hearty and there were a ton of people there. It was great. Loads of beers, shots, etc. I watched beer pong for a little while and then Fresh called. He said that they were at the bar around the corner from his bar, so Joy and I took two of the boys with us to meet Fresh and Priest at the bar. Well, as it was 3:30 in the morning, the bouncer wouldn’t let us in, so I poked my head in the door and tried to get Fresh’s attention, which fortunately didn’t take long as it was like –12 outside and I was wearing a very short skirt. Since we couldn’t get into a bar, we decided to go to Priest’s house, so Joy, Occifer, Fresh and I piled into Joy’s car, while we stuck Priest and Teddy in a cab. Needless to say, Teddy was a little confused. My bad!

Once we got to Priest’s house, we decided to play cribbage, of all things. I was not so awake at this point, and I’m sure that last beer wasn’t a good idea. Either way, I pretty much decided that Fresh’s shoulder was a great pillow. Poor guy. I can’t imagine that I was very helpful with cribbage, since I still don’t understand it. Or why we decided to play, but whatever.

The crew finally started to run out of steam, so Occifer, Joy, Teddy and I headed back to Joy’s house to finally get some sleep. I think we rolled in sometime around 5:30am. It was ridiculous. We didn’t even get to sleep that long, since we all woke up thirsty and hungover a few hours later. That, and Joy and I had brunch plans with Sprite, Princess, and Mrs. Fogg. So we watched some football, Joy showered, and then we took the boys back to their house. Joy and I headed over to my place so I could shower and change, since I was still wearing pajamas I’d borrowed from her as well as pieces of my Halloween costume. I was so cute.

Brunch was awesome. Joy and I stopped by to get some coffee from Strong Draught and then headed over to the restaurant, which was beautiful and so cute. We stood around for ages, which wasn’t so bad as Joy and I regaled the girls with stories. We sat Montage-style at a large table and had the sweetest server. The food was delicious—I highly recommend the Special Scramble. Yum. One of the hosts who had talked to us a little bit was dressed as a vampire and was really cute, so on the way back from the bathroom, I stopped by the table where he was taking a break and eating to tell him, “I just wanted to tell you that I think you are so cute.” He smiled and thanked me. On the way out, he ran over, stopped us and told us that since we’d waited so long for our table that we were to jog his memory and he would seat us immediately anytime we came back. The girls all looked at me when we got out the door and said that I should tell people they’re cute more often!!

After that, Joy and I dragged our sorry carcasses up to the Crystal to participate in Trick-or-Vote, which meant that we had to go door to door encouraging people who hadn’t voted yet to do so. It sounded way more painful than it ended up being, which rocked. I was paired up with Joy, Econut and one of his coworkers. I ran into a ton of people, most of whom I hadn’t seen in ages. Clark Kent accosted me and told me that he really wants to do ski school. So I’m forwarding his info to my boss. If he wasn’t so odd, he’d be really hot. After canvassing, Joy and I decided to bail out for a few hours since we were absolutely death on feet at that point. She went to bed while I helped Strong Draught with his costume, caught up on “Lost”, talked to Fresh, changed into my costume and headed back to the Crystal for the party. It was fun and I talked to a bunch of people again. Clark was hilarious—I think he had gotten drunk in the meantime, so that was awesome. The first band was the Retrofits and they were fun. The second band sucked, which is too bad since I think it made people leave. The third band was March Fourth, who is awesome and then Everclear came onstage. I finally bailed partway through that thanks to exhaustion.

And for the second work morning in a row, my alarm clock didn’t work. And can bite me. Thank God for my weird friends who feel the need to call me at 7:30 in the morning and then acquiesce when I beg them to drive me to work. Chitown kicks ass.
